Urgent calls for Liberia to improve its education policy for all Liberian children were declared recently by prominent individuals and advocacy groups. According to reports, the illiteracy rate in the country is at an all-time high between 80 – 90%. In a declaration by P.K.Early, there was a call for a holistic approach to the education dilemma. Liberia would need to prioritize its education commitment with the same fervor as its need for security. A holistic approach would address the need to revive the education sector by expanding the curriculum during “regular schooling,” after-school programs, as well as integrating sports and technology programs. The hope is to fulfill the motto, “the classroom is everywhere.” The benefit would be on the core learning outcomes.
A similar call for change to Liberia’s education policy was made recently by Mr. D. Sonpon Weah, II, the Advocacy and Communications Officer of The Association of Evangelicals of Liberia (AEL) during a speech made at the Donald M. Kams Wesleyan Institute in Logan Town on Bushrod Island. Specifically, a passionate appeal was made for an improved education policy to include free schooling and holistic compulsory education for all children below 18 years of age in the country. The goal would be to “develop and sustain an educated young generation in our postwar society.” The rewards of a successful education policy would result in individuals desiring a lifetime of learning and continuing the education process after the completion of their formal education.
