President Vladimir Putin has recently suggested reinstalling a Soviet-style GTO physical education program at schools in Russia. This is in response to the student’s lack of interest in physical activities, while their interest in TV and computers only increase.
Putin recently appeared at a martial arts event to promote a healthier lifestyle for the children of Russia. Compared to other countries, he states that their children are in worst shape compared to a few decades ago. Almost half of the Russian children are showing signs of disorders with musculoskeletal development. At the same time, two-thirds of children have chronic diseases by the age of 14. By reintroducing the GTO program, he hopes to improve the life quality of the younger generation.
“The revival of this system – in a new, modern format – could bring major benefits,” said Putin. Russian Sports Minister, Vitaly Mutko, stated that Putin hopes to nationally reintroduce the physical education standard by 2016.
Several schools and politicians are said to be in agreement with Putin, although are asking for test standards to remain flexible.
The GTO is a mass physical training program that stands for “Ready for Labor and Defense.” It was introduced in 1931 by Joseph Stalin, and aimed at enhancing the Soviet people’s physical education and readiness. It included gymnastics, running, high and long jumps, throwing, swimming, and shooting. Those who passed the physical training tests with excellence were awarded either silver or gold colored badges.
