Academically low-performing girls in Cote d’Ivoire may see a brighter future thanks to a new program offered by the Nord school complex. Here, girls are able to seek extra help on their days off. Offering more than just remedial classes, the Nord Center also uses art as a medium to improve the learning abilities of these students.
Using art, instructors show these girls that practice is needed to improve their skills. This mindset is then applied to other subjects to encourage students to practice skills such as reading and math.
These classes are free to attend and have boasted great outcomes. Attendance has resulted in improvements in grades and self-confidence. Additionally, these classes have instilled the value of education and a desire to learn in students who otherwise may have been on the path to quitting school and working in the fields or as housewives. Instead, these students now work to improve their academic standing and finish school in order to secure better prospects for themselves and their families.
