Reports: South Africa Teachers’ Union Adding to Education Troubles

DA Election Launch_ Kliptown, Soweto, March 2011 South African Democratic Teachers’ Union has been found to be continuing the cycle migration of learners from poor families in South Africa from the Eastern Cape to other regions in search of education.

The Eastern Cape has the lowest pass rate in the country, while the Western Cape has the highest. Twenty-eight percent of the school infrastructure budget in the Eastern Cape was spent last year, while 30 schools were built in the Western Cape. Half of the schools in the Eastern Cape do not have textbooks while every child has a textbook in the Western Cape.

The Democratic Alliance in South Africa, which runs the Western Cape, is hoping to address the education issues throughout the country. SADTU’s role in education may change as more students run to the Western Cape for education.
