Philippines Creates K Through 12 System for New School Year
The last country in Asia to do so, the Philippines announced that its current ten-year curriculum would be changed to a K through 12 system for next year. Grade seven will become the first year of junior high school, where before it marked the first year of high school, and senior high school will be grades 11 and 12.
Complaints have been made by teachers and parents that the program is not ready for implementation in the fall. Other complaints have been concerned with the lack of teachers, lack of classrooms, and overcrowding.
However, the complaints have been answered with assurances that the program has been smoothed out for the students, and the government expects 21 million new students with the expansion of grades. “As we implement the new K to 12 curriculum for grade one and grade seven this school year, we made sure that public elementary and secondary schools across the country are ready for the school opening,” said the Education Secretary.
